Retaining Wall Installation in Columbus, OH

Block, stone, and boulder walls built with proper drainage. We fix slopes, prevent erosion, and create usable space in your yard.

Walls That Actually Hold

A retaining wall has one job: hold back the earth behind it. Sounds simple, but a surprising number of walls in Columbus are failing because they were built without drainage, without a proper base, or without enough setback on each course.

Water is the enemy of every retaining wall. When it builds up behind the wall, the pressure pushes it forward. That's why every wall we build has drainage aggregate behind it, a perforated drain pipe at the base, and filter fabric to keep soil from clogging the system. It's not glamorous work, but it's what keeps your wall standing 20 years from now.

We build retaining walls in Columbus using segmental block, natural stone, and boulders. Whatever fits your property, your slope, and your budget.

Wall Types

Types of Retaining Walls We Build

Segmental Block Walls

These are our most common retaining walls. Manufactured concrete blocks that interlock and stack with a slight setback on each course. They come in different colors and textures, handle heavy loads well, and install more efficiently than natural stone. Brands like Versa-Lok, Belgard, and Unilock all make quality block.

Natural Stone Walls

Limestone, sandstone, and fieldstone walls give you a look that manufactured block can't match. Each stone is different, so the finished wall has real character. They take longer to build because each piece has to be selected and placed by hand, but the result is worth it if aesthetics matter to you.

Boulder Walls

Large natural boulders stacked and set into the hillside. Boulder walls look great on larger properties and blend in with natural surroundings. They work best for walls under 4 feet and for areas where a more rustic look fits the landscape.

Tiered Walls

If your slope is steep, sometimes one tall wall isn't the best answer. Two or three shorter walls with flat planting areas between them can be more stable, more attractive, and often cheaper than a single tall wall that needs engineering.

When You Need a Retaining Wall

  • Your yard has a slope that's eroding or washing out
  • You want to create a flat, usable area on a sloped lot
  • Water is running toward your house or pooling in your yard
  • An existing wall is leaning, cracking, or falling apart
  • You're building a patio or driveway on a grade change
  • Your neighbor's property sits higher than yours and soil is pushing into your space

If any of that sounds familiar, call us. We'll come out, look at the slope, and tell you what kind of wall makes sense, or if there's a simpler fix.

How We Build

Our Retaining Wall Process

1. Site Assessment

We look at the slope, soil conditions, drainage patterns, and what's above and below the wall. We measure the run and the rise and figure out the right wall type and height.

2. Excavation & Base

We dig a trench below grade, compact the subsoil, and lay a crushed stone base. The first course of block sits partly below ground, this is what keeps the wall from sliding forward.

3. Wall Construction & Drainage

We stack each course with the proper setback, fill behind with drainage aggregate, and install perforated pipe at the base to carry water away. Filter fabric keeps soil from mixing with the stone.

4. Cap & Backfill

Cap blocks get glued on top, we backfill with topsoil, and grade the area so water flows away from the wall. Clean site, done right.

Retaining walls are one of those things that either work for decades or fail within a few years. There's no middle ground. The difference comes down to how the base is prepped and whether there's actual drainage behind the wall.

I'm Edgar Munoz, and I've been building retaining walls across Columbus for over six years. I'm on every job. I don't hand this off to someone else because walls are too important to get wrong. If I wouldn't trust it in my own yard, I'm not putting it in yours.

FAQ

Retaining Wall Questions

How much does a retaining wall cost in Columbus?

Retaining walls in Columbus typically cost $25-$50 per square face foot for segmental block walls, and $35-$65+ for natural stone. A 50-foot long wall that's 3 feet tall might run $3,750-$9,750 depending on the material and site conditions. Taller walls and walls that need engineering add cost. We give free on-site estimates.

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Ohio?

In Columbus, retaining walls over 4 feet tall (measured from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall) generally require a building permit and may need engineered drawings. Walls under 4 feet usually don't need a permit, but there may be setback requirements. We check this for you before we start.

What type of retaining wall is best for my yard?

It depends on the height, the look you want, and your budget. Segmental block walls are the most popular, they're strong, come in many styles, and install efficiently. Natural stone walls look great but cost more. Boulder walls work well for a natural look on larger properties. We'll recommend the right type during your free estimate.

How long do retaining walls last?

A properly built retaining wall with good drainage should last 50+ years. The key is the drainage behind the wall, without it, water pressure builds up and pushes the wall out over time. We install drainage aggregate and perforated pipe behind every wall we build.

Can you fix a failing retaining wall?

Sometimes, depending on how bad it is. If a wall is leaning slightly, we may be able to rebuild the top courses and add drainage. If it's significantly failed, bowing out, falling over, or undermined, it usually needs to come out and be rebuilt the right way. We'll be honest about what makes sense.

Got a Slope Problem?

Tell us about it. We'll come out, look at the grade, and give you a straight answer on what it'll take to fix it.
